上野で仕事が終わった日、思い立って、JR山手線の御徒町から秋葉原方面へ歩く。高架下にある「２K540 Aki-Oka Artisan」に立ち寄るのが目的。
「２K540」は東京駅から2Km540mに位置する場所という意味を持ち、「ニーケーゴーヨンマル」と読む。50近くの小さな工房やお店が集まっていて、日本の洗練された職人技が堪能できる。
自分の好みにカスタマイズできる傘はオーダーして30分やそこらで受け取れる。自社工場でつくられたランドセルは色も素材も機能性も多様。赤と黒だけという私の世代は遠い過去の話で、たとえば、外は水色で中はピンクのものを女の子が選んだりするらしい。日本では、小学生のスクールバッグの役割を持つランドセルだが、意外にも海外の人に人気がある。アニメやマンガの影響だったり、アメリカ人女優が愛用していたり、理由はさまざまだが、品質の良さが評価されているのは間違いないだろう。
コロナ禍による変化を心配していたが、個性あふれる「ものづくり」を誇る場所は、思った以上に賑わっていた。今度は、もう少し時間をかけてそぞろ歩いてみたい。

The name of "2K540" comes from the place 2km and 540m far from Tokyo station. Since about 10 years ago, creators have gathered around the place, making a small town full of artisanship. You'll find a wide variety of shops where e.g. you can customerize an umbrella to your likings, or try to wear a cute and durable school backpack called RANDOSERU, which became popular among overseas celebrities thanks to an American actress, Zooey Deschanel.
