Goodbye, Ignorance

Web

Zojo-ji temple, located in Shiba, Tokyo, is one of my recommended temples to the international guests.

The over 600-year-old temple has lots of attractions:

you can feel both traditional and modern because Tokyo Tower stands behind the old temple; you can see the beautiful pink cherry blossoms with the red high Tokyo landmark tower together when visiting in early spring; you can visit the Tokugawa shogunate graves; you can see the huge cedar tree planted by the 18th US President Grant in 1879, meaning you can know how he was welcomed (actually the Emperor Meiji treated him hospitably at the tea house of Hama Palace used as a state guest house), etc..

Among its many features, I especially like the main gate called San-Gedatsu-Mon. It's said that we will be able to purify ourselves and release three worldly desires of greed, anger, and ignorance by passing through the gate.

Right now I'm feeling like I should go there to release my ignorance. Why?

Yesterday I was surprised to know that I might lose my muscle mass when running in the peak zone defined by Fitbit. I'm not exactly sure, but Fitbit personalizes our heart-rate zones (fatburning zone, cardio zone, peak zone) using the difference between our maximum heart rate and our resting heart rate. In other words, when we run more than 10km or over 60 minutes at an exhausting pace (meaning the peak zone), our body is forced to use amino acids (necessary for muscle growth) in protein as an energy source after using up carbohydrate and fat. Thus adequately fuelling our body through food or doing any complementary strength training are cruicial.

As I wrote so far, I've usually tried to run fast (in the peak zone). On top of that, I'm almost vegan (meaning almost no animal protein) and don't have a habit of regular strength training. How silly I've been! I need to learn how my body works when running and have to say goodbye to my ignorance.

Today, therefore, I run at a steady and comfortable pace as the above photo shows. More cardio zone than peak zone! I'll usually run like this and sometimes want to run at my maximum pace.
